Fly & Drive Reggae, Jungle & Hot Springs

Description

Start your journey driving through the astonishing beauty of Braulio Carrillo National Park on your way to the Caribbean. From the Caribbean coast, you continue along mystical forests to Monteverde.

Don’t forget to bring your binoculars and camera to retain your impressions of the variegated flora and fauna. On your trip along tropical trails with great birdwatching opportunities, you will also have plenty of time to create your own series of tropical life photographs. You will find gorgeous secluded spots where there will be nothing else around - just you and nature. Live a fascinating jungle experience or dance all night to the beats of reggae music and Calypso in the heart of the Caribbean. Then to give a fine ending to your stay why not give yourself a well-deserved treat relaxing at the mineral hot springs and a stroll in the magical cloudforest of Monteverde?

Day 1 Transfer-in

Our ARA Tours airport guide will welcome you at the exit of the airport and accompany you to your city hotel. There you will have the chance to recover from the flight before your tropical adventure starts.

Day 2 San José – Puerto Viejo de Limón

In the morning you take over your rental car and start the adventure with a scenic drive through Braulio Carrillo National Park and the northern lowlands towards the Caribbean. Once there, you will learn about all the things that our beautiful sandy beaches have to offer. Relax under a palm tree, enjoy the sun and read some magazines or your latest acquired book. Otherwise, enjoy the wonderful landscapes on a relaxing stroll or have fun in the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Day 3 Puerto Viejo de Limón

Why don’t you find a quiet and solitary spot at the beach? You will definitively enjoy having some time and space for yourself. Alternatively, you can go and explore the Gandoca Manzanillo Reserve, where snorkeling and scuba diving will give you the opportunity to experience it’s tropical underwater life with its exotic fish, corals and beautiful coastline.

Day 4 Puerto Viejo de Limón – Selva Bananito

Today you drive a few kilometres to the North to the small village of Bananito. Once there, a lodge representative will take you over. You leave your rented car at the parking lot in Salón Delia (extra fee to be paid on spot) and pick it up on day 6. You continue in a 4-wheel-drive car and enjoy the 11 km ride to the lodge over adventurous trails and crossing rivers. After a welcome drink you have time to relax in a hammock or start to explore the beautiful surroundings. This first day in Bananito ends with a candlelight dinner in the lodge's restaurant.

Day 5 Selva Bananito

Optional local activities. Choose between the following activities:
  • Included tour in the first night: Tree Planting Tour (cannot be changed)
  • Included in every following night: one tour per night, to choose out of the following:
    • Guided hike: Natural History Trail
    • Tree climbing lesson
    • Horseback riding

Included fees/tours: During your stay at Selva Bananito Lodge one tour per night is included, first tour is the tree planting. Choose between the guided hike, the tree climbing lesson and the horseback riding tour for the second tour.

Day 6 Bananito – Limón – Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí

The journey takes you into the northern lowlands, where you will explore the real countryside. The Sarapiquí area is a real nature treasure where you will get to uncover many of the tropical secrets of the jungle.

Day 7 Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí

Time for optional local activities. Our recommendation is to visit La Tirimbina for a cultural and natural experience in the chocolate tour. Otherwise you can take advantage of a healthy walk to see wildlife. Don´t forget your binoculars, they will never leave your face!

Day 8 Sarapiquí – Boca Tapada

Go further up north where Costa Rica’s country life can be seen in its original authentic version. Via Pital you reach the village of Boca Tapada in the northern lowlands near the mouth of the San Carlos River, which serves as the border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua. This secluded area is home to hundreds of pineapple and sugar cane plantations, as well as to a rich biodiversity of plants and animals which are highly dependent on Boca Tapada’s wetlands.

Day 8 Sarapiquí – Boca Tapada

Go further up north where Costa Rica’s country life can be seen in its original authentic version. Via Pital you reach the village of Boca Tapada in the northern lowlands near the mouth of the San Carlos River, which serves as the border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua. This secluded area is home to hundreds of pineapple and sugar cane plantations, as well as to a rich biodiversity of plants and animals which are highly dependent on Boca Tapada’s wetlands.

Day 9 Boca Tapada

As an option we recommend to do a hike in the rainforest, as well as a boat tour or kayak tour on the San Carlos River. This is a virgin area of natural forest, where many animals are repeatedly seen.

Day 10 Boca Tapada – La Fortuna

Drive back to Pital and via Aguas Zarcas and Muelle to La Fortuna, located at the foot of Arenal Volcano. A must during your Costa Rica vacation is an excursion there. Weather permitting, you will wake up to a wonderful view of the volcano. We highly recommend a hike by the old lava fields of the volcano (entrance fee to the national park not included, to be paid on spot). The fantastic view of the volcano over Lake Arenal is something you will remember for a long time. A variety of other tours are run in the region, and they will definitively take you around some of the most stunning venues around La Fortuna, for instance Ecocentro Danaus with its butterfly garden, the medicinal plantations, or a visit to La Fortuna waterfall, where you’ll have the chance to take a refreshing swim. Give yourself a treat and try the relaxing mineral hot springs. All activities can be booked on spot.

Day 11 La Fortuna

Enjoy a fantastic choice of optional activities ranging from: Hanging bridges in the canopy of the forest, horseback riding, boat tours, a bike tours etc...

Day 12 La Fortuna - Monteverde

A picturesque journey around the northern shore of Lake Arenal awaits you today on your way to the cloud forest. From Nuevo Arenal continue to the northern part of Lake Arenal. You’ll be able to admire the windmills of a wind farm in the horizon - a dazzling vision of a clean energy future! Once in Tilarán, follow the signs to Monteverde / Santa Elena. The last approx. 35km may be in quite poor condition, especially after heavy rainfalls. In Monteverde it can get quite chilly at night.

Day 13 Monteverde

Day to be spent at your leisure exploring the cloud forest and the countryside. This place is famous for its cloud forest reserves, pleasant temperatures and for its many tourism attractions such as a butterfly garden, a hummingbird gallery, a snake museum, the hanging bridges, canopy tours and much more.

Day 14 Monteverde – San José (or beach extension)

Drive back to San José (overnight not included) where you drop off your rental car. Note: Against a drop-off-fee, you can also drop off your car at one of the beautiful beaches of the northern region of Guanacaste or in the Central Pacific and extend your stay at the beach.

Total driving time today: about 3 hours to San José. In case of a beach extension, it takes 2-3 hours to the beaches of North Pacific or 2-4 hours to the beaches of the Central Pacific Coast.
