Golfing Costa Rica

Costa Rica > Central Valley > San Jose

Description

Golfing in the tropics! Enjoy the breathtaking nature Costa Rica has to offer and get to play the best golf courses in the country. You will also see several of the highlights of Costa Rica, as well as a few hidden gems such as the cloud forest paradise of San Gerardo de Dota, the southern Pacific coast and Guanacaste´s beautiful beaches. We take care of the itinerary and tee time reservations and you take care of enjoying yourself, having fun and some relaxed time.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in San José/Costa Rica - Transfer in

Upon arrival at the airport in San José and after having passed the immigration point, you will be welcomed by a representative of CANATUR, who will accompany you to the baggage claim and through customs to the exit. Here, the English-speaking airport guide from ARA Tours is already waiting for you. He will provide you with your travel documentation and answer any question you might have. Finally, a private transfer will bring you to your hotel. The terrace of your hotel opens directly to hole #3 of the Cariari Golf Course - what better way to start your golf vacation than having a direct view of the upcoming green!

Day 2: Cariari Country Club

In the morning you will visit the Cariari Country Club golf course, located next to the hotel. If you are looking for a challenge, then this 18-hole course (par 71) is perfect for you. It has a demanding layout that plays along rolling hills that lie 1,000 meters above sea level. The course, formerly a coffee plantation before being turned into a golf course in the 70's, features dense tropical forest throughout that provides shade and scenery but also proves to be a difficult element of the course. The fairways are narrow and the large greens are well protected by numerous sand traps. Due to the undulating terrain, some of the downhill greens move very fast and some landing areas are uphill. Strong winds also affect play on the course. The golf round is scheduled for 9 am, afterwards, you will return to the hotel. In the afternoon you may want to explore downtown San José and visit interesting and historically important buildings like the National Theater and the Gold Museum (entrance fees not included in the price).

Day 3: San José - Optional Golf Round Valle del Sol - San Gerardo de Dota

After breakfast, you will leave the hotel and now have two options to continue your adventure: If you prefer another round of golf, you drive to the Valle del Sol Golf Course about 30mins south-west of the hotel. It offers impressive views of the Barva Volcano further north and a beautiful mountain range in the south. As everywhere in Costa Rica you will also find abundant flora and fauna. The beautiful 18-hole golf course planned by Tracy May (7011 yards/72 Par) offers plenty of variety. It has wide undulating fairways surrounded by majestic trees and vast lakes that attract a diverse and vibrant wildlife. Surrounded by colourful gardens, the greens present a surface that is smooth and fast, and without a doubt, will be a challenge for the players. Each hole offers an average of 4 or 5 tee positions for various levels of the game, which makes the course a challenge for professionals while being friendly and enjoyable for the less experienced. If you prefer sightseeing, you may first visit the Irazu volcano, the highest volcano in the country (3432m above sea-level). With good weather conditions - the best time to visit is early to mid morning - and a bit of luck you can see both the Pacific as well as the Caribbean coast from the top of the colossus. Afterwards, stop and visit the former capital of the country, Cartago, on the way to the next hotel. The famous cathedral, located in the heart of downtown Cartago, is a destination for millions of pilgrims each year (mainly during the month of August) and well worth a visit. Six blocks further west you will also find Las Ruinas (the ruins), which are not actually ruins but rather the remains of a church that was never finished building. Whatever you prefer, later today continue driving to the cloud forest region around San Gerardo de Dota.

Day 4: San Gerardo de Dota - Quetzal Hike - Dominical

This morning you take a break from golf. It pays to get up early and take a morning walk with a local, English-speaking guide. While exploring the vast evergreen cloud forest you will definitely get to see a lot of amazing animals, maybe even glimpse the legendary quetzal, a charming colourful bird that was sacred to the Mayans. Here, you may have the opportunity to take some of the most impressive photos of the entire trip, since flora and fauna are simply remarkable at this altitude, full of colours and life. After the hike, you leave this cloud forest paradise and head down towards the Pacific coast. The changes in climate and surroundings, which you will notice on the way to Dominical, are remarkable and you will experience up close the difference in vegetation, temperature and humidity between the cloud forest and sea level.

Day 5: Dominical

This day is at leisure. You have the option to play golf at 9-hole San Buenas Golf course, about 35mins further south and off the beaten track. Flanked by impressive mountain ranges, this golf course is surrounded by dense vegetation but the Greens and Fairways are impeccably maintained. Trees, water obstacles and cleverly placed bunkers provide interesting challenges. Exotic birds, monkeys, iguanas and sometimes even an armadillo make for a different audience than your usual spectators. Due to its somewhat remote location, you will often have the course to yourself, even in high season, however, please note that there is no Club house (a small typical Rancho provides refreshments after the game). Alternatively, you may book a Whale-/Dolphin watching tour. Whales can usually be seen during about 8 months of the year (mid-July to End of October and mid-December to End of March) so your chances of spotting one during this boat excursion are pretty good.

Day 6: Dominical - Jacó

Today drive parallel to the Pacific coast further north to the lively beach town of Jaco. On the way, you may want to stop in Manuel Antonio and visit the world famous National Park of the same name. This is one of the most visited parks in Costa Rica and protects a large piece of rainforest in which, among lots of other animal species, mainly the endangered Squirrel Monkeys live. The park also incorporates several beautiful beaches perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

Day 7: Jacó - La Fortuna

Playa Herradura to start your golf round at 7 am. This gem is located on the central Pacific coast and a special treat for nature enthusiasts. Surrounded by pure rainforest with a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean this 18-hole/72 Par Golf course belongs to a huge tourism complex which includes Villas, the Los Sueños Marriott Hotel and a Marina. The golf course, designed by Ted Robinson, is a challenging one. Long, wide fairways take turns with narrow, tree-lined ones. The Greens are demanding and call for a precise game and good monitoring and estimating of the ball´s rolling path. Monkeys, Macaws, Armadillos, Iguanas, Coatis and countless other animals usually closely watch your swing and provide for distractions and other topics than Golf. After the golf round, continue driving up north. On the way, you may stop at the bridge that crosses the Tárcoles river to have a look at the large population of crocodiles inhabiting this area. Then you will continue your drive towards La Fortuna and with a bit of luck and good weather conditions, the impressive Arenal Volcano will greet you long before you arrive at the hotel. In the evening you have time to visit one of the local hot springs (not included).

Day 8 La Fortuna

The day today is at leisure. We recommend visiting the more than 150 years old farm La Casona Rio Fortuna, located close to the village of Sonafluca. Here you will experience the typical, rural Costa Rican life. On the farm, a variety of fruit trees and different vegetables are grown and spices are cultivated. You will learn how to prepare the typical tortillas and can taste them together with a nice cup of coffee. After a walk around the farm, you will board a trailer pulled by a tractor and visit a neighbor´s family at their home. You will see plantations of pineapple, macadamia trees and papaya plants on the way and then visit a local school, where you will learn about the Costarican schooling system and the children will proudly show you traditional dances. With this visit, you support not only the school itself but also other non-profitable projects of the town. During holidays the school is closed, in this case, you will see the typical dances at La Casona. Finally, you will enjoy a hearty lunch at the farmhouse. At the hotel reception, you can also book more activities like Arenal hike, Hanging Bridges, Chocolate Waterfall Adventure, Horseback ride and Canopy Tour.

Day 9: La Fortuna - Playa Panama

Day 9: La Fortuna - Playa Panama After breakfast, there is time for another optional activity or some relaxed time at the pool before you head back to the Panamerican Highway and from there continue to the northern Pacific coast. The Casa Conde Beachfront Hotel offers comfort and relaxation in a welcoming environment. It is located at Playa Panama, one of the most pristine beaches in Costa Rica, and only 20 minutes away from the Liberia International Airport in Guanacaste. Playa Panama, surrounded by lush vegetation, is quiet, secluded and certified with the Blue Flag for being one of the cleanest beaches in the country. The hotel rooms are spacious and clean and the 2 large pools (one regular, one with salt-water) invite to relax.

Day 10: Playa Panama

Guanacaste offers a great variety of golf courses and within max. 1.5hrs driving from Casa Conde you will find three of the best ones:

- Golf at Four Seasons Papagayo (34km from Casa Conde): Designed by Arnold Palmer, this 18-hole, par-72 championship golf course is ranked among the "Top 100 Courses Outside the United States" by Golf Digest. Your experience begins atop one of Peninsula Papagayo's highest plateaus and spectacular water views await you at 14 of the 18 holes. The course, not only set amid crystalline waters but also deep green forests, has labelled important trees, turning the cart path into a botanical garden. Hole to hole, the course offers a chance to see and appreciate a diversity of colourful plant, tree, bird and animal species. The congo (howler) and capuchin (white-faced) monkeys are among visitors' favourites. The Resort offers a driving range, a sand-bunker practice area and putting and chipping greens.

- Reserva Conchal (42km from Casa Conde): This 18-hole / 71 par golf course was designed by Robert Trent Jones II and impresses with its natural beauty. The championship course offers plenty of challenges for all levels, as the different tee areas were cleverly placed - the layout consists of two distinct returning nines wandering through native forests, lagoons and along 1.6 miles of white sand Pacific Ocean beach. The different wind conditions and a few water obstacles require a strategic game. From the slightly rolling hills, you can catch some great views of the ocean, and you will fairly regularly see iguanas as well as many bird species close by. This golf course promises an excellent golfing experience on a well-maintained course.

Hacienda Pinilla (63km from Casa Conde) The 18 hole golf course at Hacienda Pinilla (7300 Yards / 72 Par) was designed by Mike Young. It is a true Bijou, which does not only meet international standards, but has also recently received an award for its nature-friendly concept. Wide and partly lined with lush vegetation, the fairways let players realize most different golf varieties. Particularly challenging are the wind conditions here, especially between December and March. You will enjoy the spectacular views of the Pacific ocean: one of the greens lies right on the beach and needs to be played against the surf. It is simply breathtaking! This well-maintained course will definitely thrill you.

Costa Rica > Central Valley > San Jose

Description

On this beautiful trip through Costa Rica, you will not only have the chance to play on some of the most amazing golf courses but also see several of the most interesting areas of the country. To get acclimatized you will start the golf rounds in the Central Valley, where you also have the possibility to visit the capital, San Jose. Afterwards cross over the highest point of the Interamerican Highway, the Cerro de la Muerte, where you can enjoy the fresh mountain air, and then descend towards the Pacific coast. You will also experience the traditional, rural Costa Rican life close to the Arenal Volcano. The last days of the trip you will spend close to the beautiful beaches of Guanacaste, where you will play some of the best courses in the country and also have time to just relax and enjoy some time off.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in San Jose and Transfer in

Upon arrival at the airport in San José and after having passed the immigration point you will be welcomed by a representative of CANATUR, who will accompany you to baggage claim and through customs to the exit. Here, your English-speaking guide from ARA Tours (might not be the same one who will accompany you during your trip) is already waiting for you. He will provide you with your travel documentation and answer any question you might have. Finally, a private transfer will bring you to your hotel.

Day 2: San Jose - Valle del Sol Golf Course

After breakfast, you will be picked up by your private, English-speaking guide and bus and drive to the 18-hole golf course Valle del Sol in the heart of the Central Valley. Designed by the recognized North American architect Tracy May, the course is 7.011 yards, Par 72 and is rated championship category. The greens are extremely well maintained and even during the rainy season it is a delight to play here. After the golf round return to your hotel. In the afternoon you will explore downtown San Jose with your guide and see the most important places, buildings and sights of this city. Visit the bustling Central Market, where from herbs to leather articles, clothes, fish, meat, vegetables, fruit and food stalls all kinds of goods can be found. Of course, you can taste some of the delicacies if you wish (not included). Walk to the National Theater and enjoy its architectural beauty, pass by the House of Parliament and finally arrive at the National Museum, the building that partly looks like an old castle. After the tour return to your hotel for a well-deserved rest.

Day 3: San José - Pérez Zeledón

After breakfast, you will leave San José and drive over the Cerro de la Muerte pass until you reach the Hacienda Alta Gracia. After arrival, the afternoon is at leisure, enjoy the amazing views from your terrace or one of the two pools. For adventurous travellers, we recommend a flight with one of the Ultralight Planes the Hacienda owns. You will take off from their small airstrip and see either the surroundings of the Hacienda as well as the city of San Isidro or even fly towards the Pacific Coast and over the Marino Ballena National Park and its iconic rock formation that looks like the tail of a whale. If you prefer to relax, there is also a SPA with a variety of treatments.

Day 4: Pérez Zeledón

This day is at leisure. There are many activities the hacienda offers, such as hiking, birdwatching, horseback riding, mountain bike tours or cooking classes. Or you may want to visit San Isidro de El General with your guide. The biggest city in the district with its famous cathedral is probably one of the most authentic ones you will find during your trip. Tourism is considerably less present than in many other places around the country since historically the area surrounding the city was and is used for agricultural purposes. If you prefer quiet time, stay at the hacienda and relax, enjoy the fresh, clean air and the amazing views this place offers.

Day 5: Pérez Zeledón - Uvita

After breakfast, you will leave this small piece of paradise and drive towards the Pacific coast. The changes in climate and surroundings, which you will notice on the way to Dominical / Uvita, are remarkable and you will experience up close the difference in vegetation, temperature and humidity between Pérez Zeledón and sea level. After arrival, the rest of the day is at leisure. You have the option to play golf at 9-hole San Buenas Golf Course, about 35mins further south and off the beaten track. Flanked by impressive mountain ranges, this golf course is surrounded by dense vegetation, however, the greens and fairways are impeccably maintained.

Day 6: Uvita

This day is at leisure. Relax in the Infinity Pool, which offers an incredible 180 degrees view of the surroundings and the coast, including the famous rock formation - the Whale´s tail - of the Marino Ballena National Park. Or you may want to visit the aforementioned National park, take a trip to Caño Island to go snorkelling or book one of the other tours offered in the area. Your guide will gladly help you with reservations.

Day 7: Uvita - Manuel Antonio National Park (closed on Mondays) - Playa Herradura

Leaving Uvita and driving north along the Pacific coast you will eventually reach Quepos and Manuel Antonio. Here you will visit the famous Manuel Antonio National Park (closed on Mondays). Beautiful beaches and well-maintained pathways provide for a nice stroll inside the park, where you usually will spot Monkeys, Sloths, Iguanas, Armadillos and Coatis. Later you will continue to drive to your hotel at Playa Herradura.

Day 8: Herradura - La Iguana Golf course

After breakfast, the La Iguana Golf course is waiting for you. This gem is located on the central Pacific coast and a special treat for nature enthusiasts. Surrounded by pure rainforest with a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean, this 18-hole/72 Par Golf course belongs to a huge tourism complex which includes Villas, the Los Sueños Marriott Hotel and a Marina. The afternoon is at leisure. You may want to visit the Carara National Park located close-by, drive to Jaco to look for souvenirs or just relax at the pool or on the beach.

Day 9: Playa Herradura - San Ramon - La Fortuna

The morning is at leisure and you can still enjoy the beautiful gardens and the large pool area of the hotel. Around noon you will drive up north. On the way, you will stop at the bridge that crosses the Tárcoles river to have a look at the large population of crocodiles inhabiting this area. Then you will continue your drive towards La Fortuna and with a bit of luck and good weather conditions, the impressive Arenal Volcano will greet you long before your arrival at the hotel. In the evening you have time to visit one of the local hot springs (not included).

Day 10: La Fortuna / Cultour La Casona

After an early breakfast, you will visit the more than 150 years old farm La Casona Rio Fortuna, located close to the village of Sonafluca. You will see plantations of pineapple, macadamia trees and papaya plants on the way and later visit a local school, where you will learn about the Costa Rican schooling system and the children will proudly show you traditional dances. With this visit, you support not only the school itself but also other non-profitable projects of the town. During holidays the school is closed, in this case, you will see the typical dances at La Casona. Finally, you will enjoy a hearty lunch at the farmhouse. The afternoon is at leisure. You can book more activities like hanging bridges, Chocolate Waterfall Adventure, horseback riding, ATVs and canopy tour.

Day 11: La Fortuna - Arenal National Park - Tamarindo

Together with your guide, you will hike through the Arenal National Park in the morning. The park is part of the 204.000 hectares of the Arenal Conservation Area and boasts an incredible biological and geological diversity. Several hiking trails lead through the secondary rainforest as well as over former lava trails, impressive proof of several large eruptions in recent history. Around noon, you will head back to the Panamerican Highway and continue to drive north. After arrival at your hotel in Tamarindo, the rest of the day is at leisure. How about a nice stroll along the beautiful beach?

Day 12: Tamarindo - Hacienda Pinilla Golf Course

After breakfast, you will drive to Hacienda Pinilla for yet another interesting golf round. The 18 hole golf course at Hacienda Pinilla (7300 Yards / 72 Par) was designed by Mike Young. It is a true bijou, which does not only meet international standards but has also recently received an award for its nature-friendly concept. Wide and partly lined with lush vegetation, the fairways let players realize most different golf varieties. Particularly challenging are the wind conditions here, especially between December and March. You will enjoy the spectacular views of the Pacific ocean: one of the greens lies very close to the beach and needs to be played against the surf. It is simply breathtaking! This well-maintained course will definitely thrill you.

Day 13: Tamarindo - Reserva Conchal Golf Course - Papagayo

Reserva Conchal and the Garra de Leon Golf Course (71 Par / 66956 yards) are a 20-minute drive north of Tamarindo. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones II and impresses with its natural beauty. The championship course offers plenty of challenges for all levels, as the different tee areas were cleverly placed. The ever changing wind conditions and a few water hazards require a corresponding strategic game. From the rolling hills, you can catch some great views of the ocean, and from time to time iguanas as well as different species of birds will pass by close to you. This golf course promises an excellent golfing experience on a well-maintained site. After this golf round, your trip continues north to the Hotel Andaz, located in Culebra Bay, Gulf of Papagayo, in the province of Guanacaste.

Day 14: Papagayo - Four Seasons Golf Course

The Four Seasons Golf Court is, without a doubt, the flagship among Costa Ricas golf courses.
