The Poás Volcano National Park is located on the Continental Divide of Costa Rica in the Central Mountain Range. At a height of 2´708m (8´885ft), the Poás Volcano is one of Costa Rica's largest volcanoes and it has been quite active in recent years.
It is one of the most visited volcanoes in Costa Rica mostly due to its proximity to the Central Valley, just above the city of Alajuela, and also because of the fact that tourists can drive up to the national park entrance right at the very top to see the volcano's two craters. The main crater measures 1.5km (0.93mi) in diameter and is considered the second widest in the world. The second crater is now a cold water lake called Botos and is accessed by a walking trail in the park.
