Entrance restrictions: Costa Rica´s National Parks

The term “load capacity” established in the conservation areas of Costa Rica, refers to the number of visitors allowed in the different spaces defined as for public use (camping areas, trails, communication roads) in the same period of time, without that presence of visitors and their activities, deteriorate the natural resources and/or infrastructure of the place.

In the National Parks visited by our clients, we indicate that they must follow certain restrictions that are established; one of them is the logistics of entry in the areas. We indicate that the park rangers are the ones who authorize the entrance of visitors to the site because, according to the procedure, can not be allowed to enter more people of the capacity that has been stipulated per day.

If the group is greater than the established limit, should be sectioned by time intervals so groups that are within the area, leave and give space to the new group. Another restriction is not to leave the demarcated paths, take your trash with you or put it in the garbage dumps, do not extract flora or fauna from the place, do not feed the animals, do not take pictures if this is restricted, do not raise your voice, do not whistle, do not disturb the fauna of the place.

We must recognize that society is strictly related to nature and therefore, resources can be used, but in a controlled manner. Part of our actions must be focused on it, and this is what we transmit to our clients when they visit our areas of expertise: conservation.

Here are some examples of the carrying capacity of the most visited national parks in Costa Rica:

It allows around 3´000 people per day.

Guayabo National Monument

404 people per day are allowed as actual load.

The protection of nature is an important issue in Costa Rica. In certain areas, tourists may visit with restrictions and in other areas they are denied access. All these controlled actions have the main objective: the protection of the fauna and flora of the protected areas.

For this reason, we recommend our wholesalers to operate groups from 2 to 25 people with 1 guide. If  the group is larger, due to logistics reasons, it should be divided and an additional guide should be hired.
