What is The Earth Hour about?

Turn off the light during 60 minutes.

Earth Hour is a global initiative with the participation of more than 190 countries and millions of people committed to supporting the fight against climate change. During this hour, people are invited to turn off the lights in companies, buildings, monuments and homes as a symbolic gesture of solidarity and environmental awareness.

This campaign is carried out annually and seeks to raise awareness in society about the need to take measures to reduce the carbon footprint and preserve the environment. In addition to turning off the lights, it promotes the adoption of sustainable habits in everyday life, such as reducing energy and water consumption, recycling and using more efficient means of transport.

More and more organisations, companies and governments are joining Earth Hour to demonstrate their commitment to caring for the planet and to raise awareness of the importance of acting responsibly and sustainably. Together we can make a difference and protect our common home for future generations.

We at ARA Tours also care about the planet and are committed to this movement. In fact, you can learn more about our commitment to sustainability here.

If you too like to make a positive impact, here are a few tips:

Tips on how to take care of the local ecosystem during your trip in Costa Rica

  1. Stay on designated trails. Follow the signs at the site and respect the signs.
  2. Do not use your camera flash to take pictures of the animals as you may disturb them.
  3. Reject practices such as taking a "selfie" hugging or holding an animal, as this promotes their exploitation. Check out our info about it.
  4. During walks in the forest, try to use subdued, unobtrusive colours so as not to disturb the local wildlife.
  5. Do not touch the plants and walk carefully on the trails.
  6. Do not feed the animals, this may alter their behaviour.
  7. Regulate your voice and do not smoke, respect the ecosystem during your visit.
  8. Enjoy the natural environment, do not remove plants or rocks. Leave the place as you found it.
  9. Avoid buying plastic bottles. You can use the same bottle and refill it with water as many times as you need. The water in Costa Rica is drinkable in practically all tourist places.
  10. Separate all your waste during the trip, look for adequate containers for the final disposal of them. If you visit places that do not have containers, take your waste with you until you find a collection centre.
  11. Follow the eco-tips in each hotel.
  12. If you visit a buffet restaurant, try to serve yourself what you are going to eat, this avoids wasting food.
  13. Don't buy souvenirs made from endangered species.
  14. Use biodegradable sunscreen and repellents, as the chemicals in these conventional products pollute ecosystems.

Tips for traveling sustainable

  1. Prefer collective means of transport, such as bus, train or metro.
  2. If you travel by car to your workplace, look for options with co-workers or people who live in your city, to make this transfer in a shared way, known as "Carpooling".
  3. As far as possible, give preference to the use of bicycles to get around.
  4. If you find cycling to get around tiring, look for an electric bike option, which is becoming more and more common in the market nowadays.

  6. Participate in local initiatives to improve the means of transport in your city.
  7. When travelling by plane, we recommend looking for initiatives that promote the calculation of gas emissions, as well as the compensation of these.
  8. If you have the option to walk in your city, do it! Before taking a taxi or bus. Besides, this brings many benefits for our health.
