The best time to travel to Costa Rica

You are planning your vacation at the tropical paradise Costa Rica and you are looking for a good travelling time? There are some things you need to keep in mind, then comparing to other travel destinations you will not find the perfect weather on Google, but with your wishes and plans for your vacation.

How do I find the perfect travel time in Costa Rica?

To answer this question you can analyze air tables and the average rainfall. You will find out that there is the dry season from November to April and the rainy season from May to October.

You won’t find a big difference between the temperatures around the year and you will see that we don’t have winter here. This is why Costa Rica is one of the countries with the best climate on earth. Not too hot and not too cold.

There is a tropical climate with little differences around the year. In the Caribbean, it can be raining and in the north pacific it can get up to 40 degrees.

Costa Rica has several different microclimates so it is good to know what you want to do in Costa Rica.

To answer the question of the best travelling time in Costa Rica, ask yourself the following:

Why do I want to travel to Costa Rica and where can I find what I am looking for?

Am I looking for a hike in the rainforest or do I just want to be at the beach; do I want to learn how to surf or do I want to see animals?

If I come to Costa Rica because I’m fascinated by the green country and its nature, then the rain season (also called green season) might be the best option for you. Even Costa Rica needs rain to show its wonderful flora and in some regions, like the province Guanacaste, you won’t see a lot of this green during the dry season.

Do you visit Costa Rica to see the egg-laying of turtles and see the baby turtles hatch?

Maybe you also want to stay for a week to participate in a voluntary program to save this wonderful paradise threatened with the extinction of animals, like the loggerhead turtle?

The leatherback turtle can become two meters long and comes to the Pacific coast for egg-laying between December and March.

The Green Sea turtle visits the Atlantic coast between June and October.

Or are you dreaming about seeing the biggest mammal on the planet live and do whale watching?

The best time for whale watching is between July and October. You can find these impressive animals at the South Pacific close to Uvita, around the National Park Ballena (whale in Spanish) until the tourist destination Manuel Antonio.

The whales can also be seen in the North Pacific.

You can watch dolphins all around the year.

Do you want to lay at the beach and let the sunshine on your belly?

In this case, the dry season between November and April is the best option.

You don't like the heat?

Visit San Gerado de Dota or Monteverde. It is cool there around the whole year and the best climate for a long hike.

You don’t want to do white water rafting during a flood but the river should not be dried out either.

If you want to zipline it shouldn’t be during a thunderstorm and for divers, the dry season is the best.

Surfers will find the perfect wave all around the year.

Are you looking for lost beaches and peace? Don’t forget that between December and February there are school vacations in Costa Rica and the beaches are full.

Are you short of cash? Then I would recommend the green season between May and October. Hotels are not booked out and often offer discounts during this season.

My general recommendation about the weather: Don’t be like a sloth, get up early.

Usually, it starts raining in the afternoon, so use the hours of sun in the morning for tours, the beach, and hikes in the rainforest. In Costa Rica, you never know what the next hours might bring.

In your daily backpack, sunscreen and protection for rain should never be missing.

And if you have bad luck and it’s raining a whole day, think about Bob Marley: “Some people feel the rain. Others just get wet.”

Go to the rainforest, where it is usually raining and the treetops are so dense, that the raindrops barely get to the hiking trails. And anyways, in Costa Rica, it is always warm.

The perfect time to travel to Costa Rica is an individual decision of your travel expectations and your priorities.

Conclusion

You can call Costa Rica an all-year- destination and it’s worth discovering this beautiful country at any time of the year with its diverse zones and animals.

Every month has got its charm and thanks to climate change, we don’t know how the weather is going to be anyway.

Even in the dry season, it can be raining sometimes and in the rainy season, there is sometimes no rain for days.

Just come and don’t bother yourself if it’s pouring rain for two hours. That only means to slow down and lay down in a hammock with a tropical cocktail and a good book. Pura Vida!
